How to Increase Your Fitness and Do Well on the APFT

By: L Jones

Being in the Army, I have to maintain a certain level of physical fitness. My level on March 25 2009 was pretty average. I know this, because I took the Army physical fitness test on March 18. For those of you that don’t know, the Army physical fitness test or APFT is a test that will measure your muscular endurance and cardiorespiratory fitness. Performance on the APFT is strongly linked to the soldier’s fitness level and his ability to do fitness-related tasks.

Well, what I really want to discuss is how I moved myself from a pretty average fitness level to a very fit level in about a month. I will focus on the three exercises incorporated in the APFT; the push-up, the sit-up and the 2-mile run. The push-ups and sit-ups you have two minites to do as many as you can. I did 55. To get a maximum score of 100 in the push-up event, I needed 73. Yesterday, I did 75. How did I increase my push ups by 20 in a month? I’ll share my techniques with you on tomorrow’s blog “How to Increase your Push-ups in one Month”.

I will also discuss techniques for increasing your sit-ups and running your 2-mile run faster in later blogs. This will be a four part series and I will get them posted in four consecutive days so you can get started right away for that next APFT or just for an overall fitness boost.
