Acer Aspire One - The Little Netbook That Could

 Reviewed by: L Jones

In December 2008, I found myself aimlessly walking the aisles in Staples looking for deals on products and electronics that I really didn’t need.  Walking from aisles to aisle, looking at software and telephones, speakers and desk chairs; finally I walked down the laptop aisle and I saw her; Aspire One was her name.

Now, I had seen netbooks before, but was never really impressed with them, because for one, they looked pretty cheap. Secondly, they typically boasted around 8GB max hard drive; pathetic, I know.  Thirdly, the operating system was usually linux. Now, after the Vista debacle;  ok, that’s too strong of word. Let’s just say that the scars left from going from XP to Vista still run deep. Any other operating system other than XP, to me is a negative.

But the Acer Aspire One was different. The glossy case caught my attention. It was like the beautiful personality of a very sexy woman. The sexiness of this computer is its 8.9″, 2.2lb body. Beautiful.

I was so impressed, that I shared my love affair with the family. I went online to sites like tiger direct and other forums to get the goods on the Acer Aspire One and all the reviews were good. I then took the family to the store and introduced the Aspire to them and interestingly enough, my 10 year old daughter fell in love as well. Long story short, we just got the net book for my daughter.

Let me give you a bit of data that screams volumes at me. 160GB hard drive; 8.9″ screen, 802.11 b/g wifi; web cam; card reader; WINDOWS XP. Come on now. This little net book packs a wallop.

I’m Hoping For a Little “Magic Jack”

Published by stealth2000 under electronics Edit This

 by: L Jones

Well, I finally did it. Today I ordered the Magic Jack, the self proclaimed 2009 Product of the Year. After searching different blogs and forums to see what others thought of the product, I weighed the negatives, which centered around bad customer service, with the positives, excellent sound quality, low price and jumped at the opportunity to get it.

I also solicited a response from my Facebook family and from Blogcatalog and strangely, only one person responded to plea my for confirmation that the product was legit. Andre Johnson, a friend from high school and fellow facebooker came to the rescue with the confirmation I needed to convince myself to purchase the gadget.

Another thing I looked at was my $33 a month comcast telephone bill. The triple play seemed like a great idea, but I think I’ll subscribe to the double play instead, eliminating the phone service from the plan. In the end, it’ll save me over $450 a year. I have the AT&T Family Plan and everyone has a cell phone, the house phone was basically to save on calls made before 7pm. The plan I use has 1100 minutes, and every month there were minutes rolled over, so that home phone was not as necessary as it once was.

Anyway, enough jabbering. When I get the gadget in the mail and get started with it, I’ll let you know how it goes. Fingers crossed.
